I would like to direct your attention to a page in the Harry Potter
Lexicon which discusses this question in detail. You'll find it at
http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon/timeline_potters.html.

Here's the timeline of those events as given in the various accounts:

just before midnight, 31 Oct 1981
Voldemort attacks the Potter family and is reduced to non-corporeal
form when his curse fails to kill Harry. Voldemort flees.

shortly thereafter
before the Muggles get there, Hagrid shows up in Godric's Hollow and
takes Harry from the rubble. Sirius Black also turns up on his flying
motorcycle. Hagrid consoles Sirius, who insists on taking Harry.
Hagrid refuses. Sirius then gives Hagrid his flying motorcycle and
sets off to find Pettigrew. Hagrid takes Harry somewhere -- we have
no idea where.

at some point in the early morning of 1 Nov 1981
Hagrid, now for some reason without Harry, encounters McGonagall and
tells her nothing about what happened, only that Dumbledore will be
in Privet Drive at some point that day. She passes a number of
parties, Wizarding folk celebrating the downfall of You Know Who.

between 7 and 8 am, 1 Nov 1981
Vernon Dursley leaves for work and notices a cat on his garden wall
and people dressed strangely on his way.

all day, 1 Nov 1981
McGonagall sits on the garden wall of Number 4 Privet Drive. The
whereabouts of Hagrid, Harry, and Dumbledore are unknown. Sirius
Black corners Peter Pettigrew in a street. Pettigrew escapes while
managing to throw all blame on Sirius.

Around midnight, Nov 1 1981
Dumbledore turns up in Privet Drive. Hagrid arrives soon after with
Harry. They leave the baby on the doorstep of Number 4. Hagrid leaves
to return Sirius his motorcycle.

Later that night/early morning, Nov 2 1981
It rains. Hopefully, Number 4 has a porch with a roof over it...

There is a LOT we don't know about these events. There are huge
chunks missing as yet. I would guess that we will learn more in
upcoming books.
