"Easy" could mean being in denial about what's happening, like Fudge.
It could also mean that you will ignore certain things eventhough you
know it isn't right because you are either apathetic or you are scared
to stand up against it.

impression that Voldemort was actually winning since the Ministry was
in chaos and that no one knew who or who wasn't a Death Eater. I think
Peter probably analyzed the situation and allied himself with the side
most likely to win. If you think about it he really didn't have much
to lose: no one on "Our Side" suspected he was a Death Eater. If
Voldemort fell without the help of Harry, Peter probably wouldn't have
been implicated since he had highly regarded friends on "Our Side",
such as the Potters and Dumbledore. Afterall, Snape was essentially
cleared because he was vouched for by Dumbledore. IF Voldemort won,
Peter was a Death Eater and spy, therefore would be rewarded under a
Voldemort reign.
