I agree with Melanie and all that Harry being prefect would be one more
burden of envy for Ron to suffer under, but there's no evidence of Ron
having better grades than Harry or more school club participation or
anything like that, and I just don't see JKR doing anything for the
purpose of being nice to Ron. She seems to like to turn up the pressure
on him.

I"m not sure if grades are everything when it comes to being a prefect..well they are important but not everything. It does seem that she keeps testing Ron, one of these days he's really going to burst the pressure will be too much. I'm not saying that he will infact betray Harry to some degree, but he serves a much greater purpose to the plot than it seems people wish him too. JKR said in her interviews on numerous occassions that Ron was planned in the plot, and that Hermione was sort of created along the way to represent herself. I don't think ron's purpose is to make the Weasley's a part of Harry's life, although that's a portion of it. His number one purpose is to be Harry's friend, I"ll agree. But JKR has a lot more planned for Ron I'm sure of it. I hope with all my heart that Ron gets his time to shine in these books, I know i"ll be dissappointed if she doesn't atleast give him some sort hero recognition.

I can imagine Dumbledore making Neville the prefect as a way to force
him to live up to the job, but Neville's grades are worse than Harry's.
Are you suggesting Dean or Seamus?

Hmmm Dean or Seamus I like that idea...

Oh so who is going to take Oliver's space on the Quidditch field? I think everyone is pretty much in unison that it will Ron, but then what if it's not.
