I normally don't post much, but as I'm on vacation for
an entire day, I decided to share my thoughts, much, I
am sure, to the dismay of everyone on the list. I live
in deathly fear of repeating the same things other
people have said, partially because my email is very
temperamental, and I never know if it is hiding back
in the deep receses of its cyberspace an email citing
all the points I want to, cackling evilly. It has been
known to do stranger things.

We've been disputing the number of prefects. The quote
"they had not seen a Gryffindor prefect yet" does not
exactly lend to the theory that there are two prefects
per year, because I always assumed that there was at
least one prefect per year for both fifth, sixth, and
seventh year. True, this does not clear up the number
per year. If each year has two, that sums up to
twenty-four total prefects, which seems like a rather
large number to squeeze into two train compartments.
(In Book One, Percy talks about the Prefects having
spaces reserved on the Hogwarts Express). Meanwhile,
Jenny brought up the theory that perhaps being a
prefect was carried down through the family. I would
guess not, because Fred and George, despite being
related to the infamous Percy, were never made
Prefects, for understandable reasons from the
administrative point of view. We never hear about
Charlie being a prefect either, do we? His role is
that of the Quidditch Star (tm) so far as I remember.

I think Hermione is a shoo-in for Prefect. Whether
Harry will become one is debatable, and the whole
question would be much simplified if we knew how many
prefects there are per year. (Refer to confusion
above.)

The New Person Who Withheld Their Name: good points.
You are not on crack, at least by my standpoint, but
my standpoint has always been slightly questionable.
The point about Mrs. Figg's house/tent was one I'd
never considered. I personally would find it highly
amusing if the Dursleys had unknowingly occasionally
left Harry in the care of a witch, not that their best
efforts weren't of the futile variety, anyway.

This is a bit of an old topic, and one that was wisely
resolved with the supposition that Jo hadn't thought
about it, but I've always been one to beat around a
dead horse. Think maybe the Hogwarts students who
can't make it to King's Cross use portkeys? Maybe
somebody said this.

Finally, I hope that Ron does join the Quidditch team,
but mostly because I feel somewhat sorry for him.
Think about how joyous he was when he got to tell
everyone the Sirius Black Tried To Stab Me story. Poor
Ron. He's my favorite of the three, but this may be
partly because I have a general weakness for the
Weasleys. I think it's interesting that Wood never
kept anyone in reserve, because it does mention in the
first book that Katie, or maybe Alicia, had been on
reserve the previous year.
