If I could draw a parallel to comics for a minute, I think Voldemort
fears the Potter LINE.
I think James' son is going to grow up to be a force to be reckoned
with Wizardwise. On par with Dumbledore perhaps. And the reason Lily
didn't have to die is that if she outlived her husband she wouldn't
be bearing any more Potter children.
So Harry had to die to ensure the line never continued and grew
stronger.
