What was Voldemort afraid of?

Each time I read GoF and the prior incantum thing, I have to ask my 
self, "Why was Voldemort afraid of the shadows of his victums?"  They 
weren't even ghosts.  What harm could they do?

For that matter, what were they saying to Voldemort when they were 
speaking to him?  Harry saw that he was especially frightened at 
those moments they were prowling around him.  So, what exactly would 
they be saying to him that would make him flinch like that?

Interesting question, no?
