Dumbledore being an animagus has been discussed before, but never from 
the angle that he transfigures into a phoenix. (Kudos to your 
daughter!)

Anyhow, Hermione only checked the registry of Animagi of the last 100 
years. Dumbledore is 150 years old according to an interview with 
Rowling (I think the Scholastic chat from last fall). So if he is on a 
registry it might not be the 20th century's registry, sort of like the 
Nicholas Flamel thing.
