The point is not that Lupin is outside and hit directly with 
moonlight but rather that "the cloud shifted" so the moon which had 
been previously covered with clouds is now hitting the *earth* 
directly. It doesn't matter whether Lupin is indoors or not, once the 
moon has no obstruction from the clouds he will transform. At least, 
I think that is what JKR is trying to show. If this is so 
inconsistent, then she could have made everything occur much earlier, 
and have Lupin transform just as the moon begins to rise. I think she 
describes the cloud on purpose.
