Dumbledore himself knows of no less than 4 unregistered animagi- 3
living - 5 if he knows about Rita (but I don't think Hermione told him
- yet) and he hasn't done anything to initiate prosecution. If
Dumbledore doesn't deem this important, then I guess it must not be
*that* serious.
I don't know about the whole animagus thing - it's supposed to be very
complicated, yet 4 students are able to perfect it. Surely other
wizards have the ability; what are the odds that 4 school buddies
could do it, but only a handful of full-fledged wizards could? Rita
Skeeter doesn't impress me as especially gifted as a wizard, yet she's
able to transform- sure she's not *supposed* to, but that moral
dilemma has nothing to do with the *ability*. McGonagall
demonstrates in front of the entire class (and, we presume, in front
of *all* her classes because she says that it never fails to get some
kind of response, or some such thing). If nearly all the students are
aware of the ability, and if it can be mastered by
less-than-gifted wizards, it just seems like there should be more
registered animagi. That there are not more registered animagi makes
me believe that there are quite a few unregistered animagi.
