Sorry, Brian, but as founder of the League of Obsessed Nitpickers
(L.O.O.N.) I am obligated to point out that 3, not 4, students
mastered the animagus spell -- Sirius Black, James Potter, and Peter
Pettigrew. The 4th unregistered animagus that we know of is Rita
Skeeter, and we have no way of knowing if she became an animagus
during her student years, or later on in life.
Nevertheless, your point is well taken that for such a complicated
spell an awful lot of people seem to have mastered it. However, it
is possible that Rita Skeeter (who doesnt strike me as the sharpest
knife in the drawer) had some help with the spell, and we know that
Peter Pettigrew did. Since James Potter and Sirius Black were known
as brilliant students, it is still possible that it takes a certain
amount of brilliant intelligence or skill to do this spell
