Don't duck - this isn't a tomato, rotten or otherwise. I don't think
we know that Sirius, James, etal got away with everything. We've
only received Snape's view on that. Just as we only get the
students' opinion that Snape craves the DADA position.
Dumbledore obviously found out about the Snape being sent into the
tunnel, so as Headmaster he could have had Sirius expelled. He
didn't do so. I don't think Dumbledore is the type to play
favorites, so this is why I think there was some other event that set
Sirius off. And, no, this is not to excuse Sirius - it was a horrible
thing to do both to Sev and, potentially, to Remus.

Agreed, and I'm sure that Snape will develop even more fully in
people's eyes as the series progresses. I'm sure that one reason
we've been shown Snape's pricklier side in the first 4 books is
because his character can play the part of an obvious bad guy. By
that I mean "bad guy" in the sense of being what Harry perceives. I
think this is somewhat necessary to keep up some tension in the
books, as the real evil, Voldemort, is rarely on stage. And this
gives the books more layers, rather than if Snape was a perfectly
charming fellow, and Harry's only worries centered around his
dealings with Malfoy.
