Joywitch:"Nevertheless, your point is well taken that for such a
complicated spell an awful lot of people seem to have mastered it.
However, it is possible that Rita Skeeter (who doesnt strike me as the
sharpest knife in the drawer) had some help with the spell, and we
know that Peter Pettigrew did. Since James Potter and Sirius Black
were known as brilliant students, it is still possible that it takes a
certain amount of brilliant intelligence or skill to do this spell."

Transformation isn't easy, agreed, but maybe the scarcest part of it
is motivation for the hard work required. Moony and Padfoot are
motivated by love of Lupin; Wormtail, maybe, but mostly to belong,
since he's described as not being in the same league as the others. He
probably wouldn't have been able to learn how without help. Rita
Skeeter's got motivation too, since she uses her skill to "bug"
people.
