Transfiguration teacher (when Tom Riddle was at Hogwarts). Professor
MacGonagall, the current Transfiguration teacher, is an Animagus, a
cat...and she uses this skill as part of the Transfiguration lessons.
Based on this, Katie decided that Dumbledore must also be an Animagus
(how else could he teach that class?). Her theory is that
Dumbledore's Animagus is a phoenix, and that this is in someway
related to the title of the next book...she said that maybe
Dumbledore is the head of the Order of the Phoenix because of this
ability (she actually said he was 'the boss of the club', after I
explained what an order was...but I got the idea).

Indeed, and the register is not a problem. I imagine Dumbledore at
the beginning of OOP in a conversation with Hermione about Rita
Skeeter, thinking to himself 'that's another one! It's high time I
got round to this animagus thing myself.' and looking it up in his
books, doing the spell, and registering. For a brilliant wizard like
him, a bit of a doddle.
And, no, speaking as a mere listie, I don't think it's inappropriate.
