But don't forget that Crouch Sr was only pulling the swap while he had
Crouch Jr under the Imperius curse. And he was then put under the Imperius
Curse when Crouch Jr went back to Voldy, but fought it off to eventually
come to Hogwarts to tell Dumbledore.
I don't think he was *that* bad--he just underestimated the potential for
disaster in bringing his son home to appease his dying wife. And a dying
spouse is pretty powerful--I can't imagine denying the last wish of your
closest loved one.
