I think Cedric was one of those "pride of young manhood" types who do
the things expected of themselves - do well in school, take part in
athletics, push themselves to excel - not for personal glory but to
better themselves. It's an old fashioned almost 19th century POV but
Cedric's got it. Had he lived he'd have eventually run for mayor of
his village and convened meetings about ensuring adequate playgrounds
for children.
Cho and Cedric were "going out"; at the very least they were close
friends. Cho is crying because he was killed suddenly and horribly
and she knows better than anyone in the school what a fine young man
he was.
I find the idea of a "reward" rather icky regarding a couple of 15
year olds and completely out of character from what we know of both
of them.
