Why did we start reading the books?

My Mum works for the library, and in the fall of '00, she brought
home SS/PS for me to read. I've always been a fan of fantasy, and
Mum wanted a young person's opinion on Harry. Granted, I was 17 at
the time, so I suppose I qualified. I got about half way through the
first chapter, snapped the book shut, announced I hated it, and
didn't give Harry another thought. I was not a happy camper that
day, I daresay.
Fastforward to Christmas '01. I'd just raced home from college to
beat out a snowstorm coming out of the mountains, and had gotten
snowed in. The only thing on television was Emma with Gweneth
Paltrow which I had seen a million times before, being a Jane Austen
fan. Mum comes back to my room, SS/PS in hand, and suggests I read
it again. By this point, I had no memory of ever reading Harry
Potter, so I settled down, willing to humour my Mum, if nothing
else. Well, I stayed up almost all night reading. I finished it
off, and when the roads were cleared, Mum brought home the rest,
which I devoured within a weekend, and I've been an addict ever since.
