I was in Rockville, MD for a week-long class.
I was 2.5 - 3 hours away from home, and an hour away from my closest
friends.
The day I went up to Rockville to prepare for the first day of class,
I had to stop at Michaels' for something. I forget what. But I
noticed Super Crown Books was going out of business. I wandered
through to see what was available from my favourite authors. Not
much; the store was pretty well gutted for the stuff I liked to read.
But Harry Potter was still fairly abundant.
"Okay," I said to myself, "It's on sale. Let's see what the big deal
is." I made sure I had the first book in the series, threw it in my
bag, and forgot about it until later that evening.
I pulled it out, read the first chapter. I was apalled at the
Dursleys, but tickled at the idea of the owls flying all over. The
scene with Dumbledore and Hagrid was brilliant.
And best of all, the "voice" JKR had chosen to write the narrative in
sounded like it had been read by a good friend of mine.
By six pm the next day [I would've finished the book that night if I
hadn't had to get up early for the class in the morning!] I had
finished it, and had hopped in the car to find a bookstore.
I found Borders, and bought the other three on the spot.
By the end of the week I'd finished the first three. I savored GoF
because it was the last.
