I think Petunia has some small bit of magic in her that could come
out in "desperate circumstances". BTW, I think she was the one who
blew up Aunt Marge who was dissing her sister at the time, after
all.
She hates Lily...why would she blow up her sister....well maybe
hate is a poor word. I think she was more afraid of Lily than
anything else. Didn't want anything to do with her.
Petunia didn't blow up her sister Lily. I believe she blew up her
sister-in-law Aunt Marge because Aunt Marge was running down Harry's
mother's family (that is, Petunia's side of the family). And while
she may not have liked Lily, Aunt Marge is making some very general
criticisms of the Evans clan.
And I don't think Petunia blew Marge up consciously; just like Harry
freed the snake in the zoo, it just happened based on strong feelings.

Didn't Harry get in trouble for blowing up Aunt Marge? Wasn't it him that
did it cause she was dissing his mum? Or am I wrong?

Each time I read GoF and the prior incantum thing, I have to ask my
self, "Why was Voldemort afraid of the shadows of his victims?" They
weren't even ghosts. What harm could they do?
For that matter, what were they saying to Voldemort when they were
speaking to him? Harry saw that he was especially frightened at
those moments they were prowling around him. So, what exactly would
they be saying to him that would make him flinch like that?
Perhaps they reminded him of the one thing Voldemort seems to fear above all
else: death. The echoes of your victims coming back to haunt you would
have to be one of the ultimate reminders of your own mortality, and although
Voldemort seems assured of his immortality (though I have doubts about this
given the mortal blood used in his "reincarnation") it is still a phobia
that likely weighs very, very heavily on his mind.
Either that, or maybe they were threatening to tickle him until he peed in
his pants...which is just as scary.
----------------------
I just wanted to put forward this idea. Do we remember when in the first
book Voldemort/Quirrell drank unicorn blood to stay alive? Does anyone else
think that even though he has taken the second potion in GOF, that the
drinking of unicorn blood will mean that no matter what he does that he will
have only a half life? That the killing of the ultimate innocent, will mean
that he will NEVER be immortal. The he will never win?
I would really love to know what it was they said. I agree that it might
have been stuff to do with death, and reminding him that he will always be
mortal. And that one day he WILL die. Because those echoes were there and
all they wanted was for Harry to win. They had been killed by Voldemort and
so wanted more than anything to see him defeated. Hence I think they would
say whatever they could to place doubt in his head.
It would have been clever tho. You couldn't really say to Voldemort, who
reigned with fear for 12 years (was it?), " You killed us, so we're gunna
make sure Harry kills you!", or "Gee, you're REALLY scary!".
Maybe they reminded him of his Muggle background. Reminded him that no
matter how much he denied it, he would always be a Muggle. Immortality, nor
killing, nor blood, nor potion could EVER, ever cleanse him from THAT.
That would scare me.
*on the topic of the Muggle who has dormant powers
Maybe the Muggle who will bloom to magic will be Voldemort's father.
No one has said that he died. (I know he will be VERY old, but.....)
It would be interesting, no, to find that Love conquered Voldemort at the
end?
Ps. other than this skewed idea, I agree that Dudley will probably be the
one. I just don't like Petunia.....
*on the topic of Lilly and James being unspeakables and working on a
counter-curse for death curse

I dunno...I can accept the possibility of them being Unspeakables, but the
rest just rubs me the wrong way. Particularly the bit with them using an
experimental Avada Kedavra defence for Harry's benefit.
It's already been stated - perhaps on multiple occasions, tho I'm entirely
too lazy to go and look - that at least part of what protected Harry was
the intensity of Lily's love. The AV defence theory serves only to cheapen
her sacrifice, something I doubt Rowling would do.
-------------
Not only does it cheapen Lilly's sacrifice for Harry, but it also lessens
how special Harry is. I really believe that there is something else about
Harry that makes him a target, and that stopped him from being killed by
Voldemort. I don't know what it is, but I refuse (most politely) to believe
that it was something other that what is INSIDE of Harry that stopped
Voldemort from killing him.
Harry is our Hero. He is our lead character. There IS something special
about him that allowed him to vanquish (almost) the most powerful dark
wizard at the tender age of 1.

I *am* worried about post-Nov. 16 discussions on this list-

I'm worried about the post movie-release time as well, but for a different
reason. Down here in Australia, it doesn't get released until Nov 29
obviously the head of the Office of Film and Literature is a You-Know-Who
fan) and I don't want to read anything about the movie until I've seen it.
Obviously, we're going to crash Yahoo with all our movie talk, (ie, there's
going to be a lot of it), so ignoring the stuff I don't want to read is
going to be next to impossible. An idea I've been toying with for a while,
but not found the right message to segue* it from is us setting up another
sister list to discuss the movie on? It would make life so much easier for
all of us who don't live in the US/UK. Please?
*have I used that incredibly cool word correctly?*
--------------------
This is a bit OT, but I didn't know that it came out later in Aust? I'm from
QLD and I had assumed it was opening on the 16th or whatever. Am I wrong???
And yes, you used segue very nicely!!!
Lol
Thanks to everyone for letting me combine all my rabble into one fat Dudley
of an email.
Please respond - I feel so special when people do!!!
Danika Longbottom - protector of Harry.
