First, deepest apologies to Steve VANDER Ark for misspelling his name.
I didn't catch it 'til my post showed up in digest. Does this mean I
don't get to assistant edit?

I find that very easy to answer: YES. Like Snape, he isn't always
*nice*, but he's definitely *good.* I find his flaws more tolerable
than Snape's because while Sirius has shown himself to be thoughtless,
I don't ever see him being cruel, and cruelty is the hardest thing for
me to forgive (and, ::turns on broken record::, he was thoughtless
when he was *16* and grudge-filled when he was *just out of
Azkaban*--I can cut him some slack). But I know this is one we have
to agree to disagree on.

One thing we do emphatically agree on is that our "doomed" list is
long. All the posts saying "this one won't die, that one won't die"
cheer my heart, but sadly, I can't believe they'll be vindicated. JKR
said the deaths start in book 4, and she has made it crystal clear
that things are going to get a lot tougher and that she wants her
readers to feel the impact of this kind of violence. Now, this is the
same woman who thought we'd be deeply upset by Cedric dying, so maybe
it's not going to be as bad as she's making it sound. But I think she
knows that we aren't going to really hurt until someone like Hagrid,
Dumbledore, Sirius, Lupin, Snape, a Weasley (BESIDES Percy), or one of
the Trio dies. And that's precisely why some of those people are
doomed. JMNSHO.

He does see through Harry (PS/SS 17) and Frank (GF 1), but it doesn't
take a genius.

I think his claim is a plain old intimidation tactic. He turns those
nasty red eyes on you and says "I always know when you're lying," and
after that it's pretty hard to lie without trembling like a plate of
lime jello.
