I've often wondered about this: do we know for sure that Snape was a
Slytherin?  Or are we just assuming it?

Recall that Sirius described Snape as a greasy kid who arrived at
Hogwarts knowing more curses than most of the older kids who hung out
with a gang of Slytherins.  An interesting way of putting it if Snape
was a Slytherin himself: of course he would have hung out with
members of his own house.  It almost sounds as if he was part of
another house (say, Gryffindor) and stood out from the usual by
hanging out with members of another, Darker, house.

Is it stated directly anywhere in the books that Snape was a
Slytherin or in a JKR interview?
