Hello everyone! I'm having a nice day - just came from Central Park
and was reading SS/PS when I came across something that has probably
been discussed ad nauseum, but what the hell.
In chapter 1, we find out that the Dursleys have had nothing to do
with the Potters for years. I was wondering about two things: first,
what did Lily think of the fact that her own sister wouldn't
communicate with her? Was she angry? Did she feel bad? Or two, were
Lily and Petunia in contact all along? Here is what made me think
that:
"'Er - Petunia, dear, - you haven't heard from your sister lately,
have you?'"
"As he [Vernon] had expected, Mrs. Dursley looked shocked and angry.
After all, they normally pretended she didn't have a sister." (p.7)
I think that she had some contact with Lily, to what extent I do not know. She obviously knew that Harry was born, and that he was in fact about Dudley's age and that his name was Harry. I think that Lily tried to keep in contact to some degree with Petunia, however, somehow I doubt if Petunia ever answered any of the Potter's what not. Some of this could be out of fear of Vernon, but I believe a great deal of it stems from their childhood together. I still maintain that Petunia was quite jealous of Lily. We never see her have any reaction really to the death of her sister. I mean if she felt close to her at all she would atleast well give some sort of frown. But then if she is that afraid of Vernon then I suppose she will do anything to please him.
