Maybe this is Dumbledore's hidden meaning when he then says,
"My memory is as good as it ever was, Severus".

But then, we're back to the question, why is Dumbledore sheltering
him?  I can't believe he'd protect anyone who used AK, no matter
how good a Potions teacher they were.  I stand by my _All In the
Family_-induced theory that Snape was duped into joining the DE's,
and switched over almost immediately, without ever killing anyone.
