I like Susanna's theory, maybe for the selfish reason that I want
Snape to continue to be a spy for Dumbledore in OoP -- how
fascinating! I can't imagine what else Snape's task might be that
Dumbledore assigned him at the end of GoF (although I'm sure JKR
can).
If Snape IS a double agent, it could explain why he will never hold
the coveted DADA position -- perhaps Dumbledore is maintaining the
front that he still has his suspicions about Snape. Maybe the story
that Snape desired the DADA position was a rumor started by
Dumbledore and Snape for this very reason.

Well said. WE see all the courageous things Snape does, but we're far
from knowing the whole story between Voldemort and Snape. It's quite
possible that Snape has done something in his DE past to be
considered a coward by Voldemort.
This whole conversation makes me wonder: has it ever been said
explicitly in canon that Voldemort has discovered that Snape
is working for Dumbledore? Hmmmmm. Must read GoF again.
