Well, in SS/PS, Voldemort must know that Snape was working to save Harry, as
he was right there with Quirrel. That would make him suspicious. I think
Snape heard of Voldemort's plan to kill James and Harry, and informed on
him. This would have given them a chance to hide, do the Fidelus charm,
etc. And, yes, I am one of those who think that Snape had some sort of
special feelings for Lily that led him to do this (whether they be family
ties or as a love interest -- I hate to think that JKR would have Snape
secretly being Harry's uncle...Evans spelled backward is dangerously close
to "Snape":) (but I don't think that is really of any significance, it seems
kind of silly to me). I'm sure there are many other motivations Snape has
that I am not even aware of. Perhaps one of these is that James saved his
life and he is indebted to him for this.
Also, regarding Dumbledore's momentary look of triumph at the end of GoF...I
think it's interesting that Moody/Crouch seems interested in what Voldemort
took from Harry and, to my recall, lets out kind of a low hiss sound when
Harry says it was blood. Looks like the blood worked in restoring
Voldemort's form, but perhaps the reactions of both Dumbledore and Crouch
could indicate he was mistaken in this in some other way. Perhaps it made
him somewhat more mortal and now able to be killed. Voldemort can now touch
Harry -- but Harry can also touch him! Earlier in one of the books,
Dumbledore makes the statement that he thinks it would be impossible to kill
Voldemort in his current form, or something to that effect. What do you
think?

I like Susanna's theory, maybe for the selfish reason that I want
Snape to continue to be a spy for Dumbledore in OoP -- how
fascinating! I can't imagine what else Snape's task might be that
Dumbledore assigned him at the end of GoF (although I'm sure JKR
can).
If Snape IS a double agent, it could explain why he will never hold
the coveted DADA position -- perhaps Dumbledore is maintaining the
front that he still has his suspicions about Snape. Maybe the story
that Snape desired the DADA position was a rumor started by
Dumbledore and Snape for this very reason.

Well said. WE see all the courageous things Snape does, but we're far
from knowing the whole story between Voldemort and Snape. It's quite
possible that Snape has done something in his DE past to be
considered a coward by Voldemort.
This whole conversation makes me wonder: has it ever been said
explicitly in canon that Voldemort has discovered that Snape
is working for Dumbledore? Hmmmmm. Must read GoF again.
