It hasn't been revealed yet, so none of us know.  That doesn't stop the
speculation, though.

One of my favorite theories is that James and Lily were aurors, and Lord
Voldemort was destroying them on general principle.  Another theory is
that he just liked killing people, and the use of the Fidelus Charm was
intended to just be protective.
