A lot of musings have gone around: Lily and James were Aurors, Harry is the 
heir of Gryffindor, Harry's just super-special, Voldemort had book with 
people's names in it and randomly picked them by pointing his wand...

I think it's because he could.  He had Wormtail, and probably a couple of 
spies that knew the Potters as well.  He probably wasn't concerned with them 
until Wormy showed up, offering anything Voldemort desired.  And if you're an 
evil Dark Lord, and you have a chance to rid yourself of a possible enemy, 
you grab at the chance.

Or he could have just wanted to go on a killing spree.  Or he wanted to make 
a statement--we've heard that the POtters were imensly popular.
