I do hope that Harry doesn't turn out to be a descendent of Gryffindor - or, if he does, it makes no difference.

To be the 'heir of Gryffindor' in the sense that his choices put him in a line of choosers-against-evil, yes.

That the purity of blood obsessed Voldemort should be physically descended from Salazar Slytherin fits nicely.  But Dumbledore's comments about Barty Crouch Jr suggest that he for one is not hoping for a lot of help from heirs.
