Subject: How do witches/wizards from Muggle Families RSVP to acceptance
announcement?

My daughter came up with an excellent question yesterday. If someone
(like Hermoine) gets a letter inviting him/her to attend Hogwarts,
but he/she is from a Muggle family, how does he/she know how to
communicate with Hogwarts?

How did Hermoine know how to get to Diagonalley to purchase her
supplies?

How's this, Marilyn?

Harry was sent his acceptance letter a number of times, and each one said:
Dear Mr. Potter,
"We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted, etc. etc. Please
send your response by owl by July 24. We will be sending an owl to your
window on that date between 8 and 9pm.... Upon receiving your agreement, we
will send further instructions as to the school supplies needed and where to
purchase them"

Hermione and all the Muggle born and living with Muggles children (and
possibly any witch/wizard family too poor to have an owl) received the same
letter and answered.
Professor Dumbledore knew Harry hadn't received his letter, so Hagrid was
enlisted to deliver a new one, with the list of what is required, and to
steer Harry into Diagon Alley and through purchasing what was needed.

Also remember, Hermione's parents accompanied her to Diagon Alley in book 2,
so they were in on the where and how-tos, and I'm guessing probably took her
to Diagon Alley the year before.

Dadgrid wrote a wonderful fanfic which also makes sense too: send a teacher
or alumni (perhaps a prefect?) to walk the wizard kids from Muggle family
kids into and through Diagon Alley the first time.
