I agree with both of you. I have the impression that the Weasley's
are very goal directed. Percy has his career mapped out. Even Fred
and George got serious enough to plan their futures as joke shop
proprietors. Charlie probably realized that a career in Quidditch
(like with most sports) only last as long as his health holds up.
Dragon study might be dangerous, but I can see Charlie's ultimate
goal is to be like Newt Scamander, well-known author and beast
authority. Another hint is Percy's comment to Harry in CoS about
Charlie liking the outdoors and deciding to study dragons. Even
Hagrid had a comment or two about Charlie being good with animals. So
I have a feeling Charlie more or less knew what he wanted to do with
his life and playing Quidditch wasn't it.
Oliver Wood's comments about Charlie seem bitter. Could Charlie have
sat out his final two years? It would be maddening for a Quidditch
fanatic like Wood if Charlie lead the team to victory in his fifth
year, then decided to sit out in his final years to study.
