This makes sense to me.  Without getting into the timeline thing, the 
comment about students not playing for the house team in their final 
year does seem reasonable, considering they have the dreaded 
N.E.W.T.s to contend with.  People such as Oliver Wood do not count 
as they intend to make a career of quidditch, and therefore would 
want the kudos of captaining the winning team in their final year.
