It was stated by Hermione, who said she THOUGHT he was. I took that 
as meaning that he was, but there was some discussion recently about 
it, that she might have been wrong. So I just thought I'd add a 
little bit more.

This is from the Sorting Hat's song in GoF:

Yet how to pick the worthy ones
When they were dead and gone?
`Twas Gryffindor who found the way,
He whipped me off his head
The founders put some brains in me
So I could choose instead!

Now it probably sits in the headmaster's office all the time, but in 
this case it came to Harry's rescue when he professed his loyalty to 
Dumbledore, so I see a special connection there.
