Fawkes came to Harry's rescue, and brought the hat with him. At 
least, that's how I understand it. The hat, I would think, is 
neutral. Yes, it was Gryffindor's to begin with, but the "brains" in 
it have to be from all four founders so it can sort new students 
correctly. Maybe a Huffelpuff or Ravenclaw could pull something else 
from it that belonged to the founder of their house?
