IMO, if there is one theme throughout children's and folk literature 
in our culture, it is the orphan.  Look at all those favourite books 
people have been mentioning on OT-Chatter; the first thing the author 
does is get the adults out of the way.  Think of all those wicked 
stepmothers.  HP is dead centre in this.
