In the US edition, Dobby DOES disappear (with a "crack"). Fred or 
George says earlier in the book that house elves have their own brand 
of magic. Maybe this is what enables Dobby to apparate and 
dissapparate on Hogwarts grounds.

Lucius Malfoy in the US edition DOESN'T leave Hogwarts with a "swish 
of his cloak". If I recall correctly, the last time he's mentioned in 
CoS, he's lying at the bottom of the stairs glaring at Harry and 
Dobby. I assume he storms out of the castle.
