Oh, please. I refuse to use the phrase "typical teenager", especially
since several of the people I know who are currently in that age
bracket are quite extraordinary people.... But stereotyping in the
opposite direction doesn't work either. I don't think it's quite
safe to assume that those who are now adults haven't been in, aren't
in, or don't remember "weird relationships". Ditto with having
friends who are mostly of the other gender; I did in nursery school,
I did in grade school, I did in college, and I do now.
All that said, I do agree that being in the thick of what the
characters are experiencing has to give you a bit of a different
viewpoint. In fact, I think that's one of the tests of good writing,
that it can stand up to a multiplicity of views, and mean something a
little different to each reader.
