Clearly certain spells emit certain colors of light. 

Also, as long as we're on the subject of colors, notice that the 
Gryffidor colors, red and gold, shower out of Harry's wand when he 
waves it in Ollivanders. Clearly that was a wand meant for him--and 
that he was meant to be in Gryffindor. 

And of course, red and gold are the colors of the plumage of Fawkes 
the Phoenix as well...
