It used to be slang here in the States too, didn't it?  I can think of
at least two 1940's films in which it is used: _The Treasure of
Sierra Madre_ (Bogey to Tim Holt: "I can go twice as far as
a Mug like you.") and _The Lady Eve_ (Babs Stanwyk to
Henry Fonda: "Don't you know you're the only man I want,
you big Mug!")
