I think that Hermione feels so much dislike for Fleur because she is part
veela. We first see this jealous side of her at the QWC when Harry and Ron
went gaga over the veelas that came out for a pre-game event. If I am
remembering correctly, Harry was about to jump out of the box they were in
before Hermione (?) grabbed him and said something like 'What are you
doing??' Here we have a situation that Hermione CAN'T join them in, this
blind hormonal infatuation based THING! The veelas don't affect her at
all. We also have Mr. Weasley making this statement a while later, after
the veelas turned nasty and ugly "That's why you don't base love on looks
alone" She knows this already, having been through the Lockhart
fiasco. Hermione, being a sensitive young lady, is seeing "her" boys
reacting like other boys she probably knows and this probably causes some
pain for her and a healthy bit of irritation. Knowing that Hermione isn't
a glamor queen, I think she might be feeling a bit betrayed by Ron and
Harry and how blatently they ignore her own value as a "girl-woman".

Then again, to stick up for Ron and Harry, I think its wonderful that they
are able to see beyond gender and appreciate Hermione as a friend first,
equal to them in all ways, rather than a GIRL!! Unfortunately we see the
hormones starting to kick in, and since Hermione was already light years
ahead of them, it looks like she'll only be farther ahead why they turn
into the ones giggling in the corner over potential dates.

I might be way off, but this has been my belief since the beginning of
GoF. Hermione has a lot of spunk and I'd like to see her with someone who
deserves her, be it Harry or Ron. Neither have gotten to that point yet,
tho :)

>Why *does* Hermione hate Fleur so much? She generally gives people
>the benefit of the doubt. Even Snape, before there was any indication
>that he was anything but horrible. But with Fleur she just seems to
>detest her from the very beginning. I don't think she's ever done
>that with anyone else. So is it only jealousy, or is there something
>else?
