With the messages about Percy, I've been re-reading the books 
focusing on the Percy bits.

I think in SS/PS, Hagrid tells Harry that Quirrell took a leave of 
absence int he Black Forest and had some traumatic encounter with a 
hag and has been afraid of nearly everything since that time. It sort 
of implies that Quirrell has been teaching for more than one year.
