That wasn't quite what I meant. What happened, I think, is that 
Icicle and Rita ended up serving the same purpose, and furthering the 
plot in the same way. My guess is that Jo was forced to choose 
between the two, and she chose Rita (for whatever reason -- probably 
because she was more fun to write).
