Yes, though I can't cite chapter and verse 'cause I lent my GF.  When 
MEM is first mentioned (back at the Burrow after the QWC), Bill or 
Charlie says, "He's an old friend of Dumbledore's, isn't he?" and 
Harry, at least, assumes this to be true right up to the end, when one 
of the reasons he can't believe Moody is the Death Eater is that he's 
Dumbledore's friend.  I assumed it to be true as well.  But your point 
that he has been very reclusive is a good one; even going with the 
idea that he and AD have been good friends for a long time, they might 
not have seen much of each other in years.  That plus MEM's odd ways 
could explain a lot.  I just wonder about the little things friends 
know about each other:  "remember that time . . . "  It's so easy for 
an impersonator to stumble onto something he should know but doesn't.
