Actually the various views of time travel have been fairly 
extensively covered in science fiction.  For an extremely funny 
version that takes essentially the same approach as JKR, try 'The 
Technicolor Time Machine' by Harry Harrison.

Asimov and Heinlein also had a go. Ursula LeGuin's Lathe of Heaven is 
in the same ball park.
