Ah, HP origins, one of my favorite topics! :D...Be prepared for long one...If
you are not interested in any origins whatsoever, delete now!

Veela - Anyone who is knowledgeable in Greek mythology or has read Homer's
The Odyssey should recognize the origin of Veela. The sirens (r harpies, as
they are sometimes called) are almost exactly like Veela. Veela are
beautiful, seductive women that turn into nasty birds when angry. Sirens are
beautiful half-bird/half-woman creatures that seduce sailors passing to come
to their island, where they proceed to eat them.

Ron Weasley - Ronniekins' name probably came from Running Weasel, a war lord
in the 6th Dynasty. He was great at strategizing and never lost a game of
chess, like Ron. He met his death when a rat his soldiers had dyed yellow for
fun knocked over a lamp in his palace and burned it to the ground. In SS/PS
Ron tried turning Scabbers yellow on the Hogwarts Express to make him more
interesting....

Basilisks - Basiliskos means 'little king' and a Basilisk was thought to be
real once. A basilisk was a snake and/or rooster-like monster that could kill
with it's gaze and breath and has poisonous fangs. A Basilisk moves much like
a cobra, moving forward with it's head up instead of wriggling flat out like
normal snakes. Basilisks could be killed from the stench of weasels, which
one could think as an odd parallel to the Weasleys in CoS although Harry
killed it. The crowing of a rooster is also fatal to it, which tallies in
with CoS. One of the descriptions I have read of the Basilisk said that it
had to be hatched from the egg of a rooster, by a road and during the days of
the dog star, Sirius. I thought that bit was interesting....

I'd write more but I am being kicked off the computer in ten minutes and I
have more mail to check!
