In PS/SS, the ghosts are described as pearly-white and slightly 
transparent, which is why I never gave much thought to the Bloody 
Baron being covered with silver blood.  I just thought of it as 
appearing silver becuase he is a ghost, part of their color scheme. 
Now that I am re-reading the book, and have come to the part in the 
foridden forest, I realize why Peeves might be so afraid of him.

As Firenze says: "...it is a monstrous thing, to slay a unicorn. The 
blood of a unicorn will keep you alive, even if you are an inch from 
death, but at a terrible price. You have slain something pure and 
defenseless to save yourself, and you will have but a half-life, a 
cursed life, from the moment the blood touches your lips."

The Baron, a dark wizard?  Cursed to haunt Hogwarts with the blood of 
his kill always upon him, the silver blood of a unicorn?
