Yep, and then Fawkes is a bird (now really?-how sharp-witted, Susanna!) which means his eyes are on the left and right side of his head, which further means that, like all animals who have their eyes that way (not poor Mrs. Norris), they're not too good at looking at something right in front of them. And sooo.... Fawkes doesn't catch the basilisc's eye. Wow, that was easily the most twisted thing I wrote today- ministry paper work takes its toll.

Catching its reflection in a puddle - easy.
Using a hand mirror to look at it round a corner - a doddle.
Through a ghost, darkly - straightforward.
Spotting missing roosters - even a lovable giant can do that.
Caught on candid camera - been done.
Pecking the eyes out in the heat of battle - more tricky, does require a Phoenix.
Controlling it with Parseltongue - if you've got it, you can do it.

But to actually look into its eyes takes someone of real magical skill and strength, perhaps as rare as Harry's unique way with Avada Kedavra. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you...

tada

...Moaning Myrtle

"And how come those portraits seem to be alive?"

"What'ya mean? All paintings move."

"No, they don't. We have lots of paintings in our villa, among them a real Chagall, and none of them..."

"And d'ya expect that something painted by a jackal will move? Now really..."
