I agree on them being relatives but not twins. I think they had same father
and different mother. As mytheory is that Snape was the one born in marriage
(The common father had lied to Sirius' mother) and, with all the prejudiced
people - only Potters accepted the Blacks. Sirius' mother was bitter about
the lying Snape, and um - had a thing about lies (have we ever seen Sirius
lie? I don't recall such point... tell me if you find one) so that she
raised Sirius to be unable to lie - or break his word. (Now can't remember
him doing that either).

At school, Sirius meets his step-brother. With all the things he's heard
from his lie-hating mother, he is quite non-disliking of Snape from the
start. Sirius does break rules as much as Snape does - however, since he's
also admitting his misdeeds at the slightest change of getting caught - he's
mainly awarded for his honesty so that he's getting less penalty if any -
than Snape. (And Snape hated /him/ for that! The other Mauraders as well).

With Lupin, I guess, Sirius does forgive him for the lies - never mind him
being a werewolf. He agrees not to tell anyone that secret (but no one
mentions about the secret passage and Whomping Willow being to kept secret,
or where Lupin goes etc.). Then, at some point, Snape prompts them about
Lupin's whereabouts - individually. He manages to break Sirius' evasiveness,
so Sirius tells him about the secret corridor and Whomping Willow. Sirius
tells James about it - and, James goes immediately to save Snape. Sirius
also tells Peter - and Albus Dumbledore, before anyone asks him. In the end,
Severus Snape is punished for breaking rules about going to the Forbidden
Forest, while James Potter is rewarded for saving Snape.. (OK - here's the
Curiosity is all right, but be careful part, and the exception on telling
the truth...)

Sirius felt guilty - he hadn't actually worded the secret, but had almost
broken it under pressure. He writes to his mother, who puts all blame on
Snape. "He shouldn't have continued to ask after you'd let him know it
wasn't a thing to tell" or something - but even in all his telling, Sirius
never once mentions Lupin's secret...

Sirius joins to fight the Dark Wizards, along with his friends and finds out
that Snape is a Death-eater... When it came time for Potter's to hide -
James will trust none but Sirius (knowing his friend's childhood and past) -
but Sirius can't trust himself to be able to keep the secret under pressure
(and he's likely to get under pressure) - so he refuses and suggests
Wormtail. Then, when Wormtail turns out to be the spy - Sirius gets
guilt-stricken for not accepting the duty on himself. He blames Snape for
causing him feel insecure about keeping secrets (and therefore, of Potter's
death, his time in Azcaban etc. even though Wormtail gets most of his hate
for that). In Azcaban, Sirius lives his worst moments again, most of them
involving Snape...
