Except that I think that Lupin knew - or at least doubted - that Sirius was 
innocent all along - at least after Sirius escaped. If Sirius sent him a 
note saying so, telling him noticing Pettigrew - maybe he did know. He knew 
Sirius wasn't going to hack Harry into pieces. He trusted Sirius. (That 
Kneazle acting protectively - well, Lupin /was/ about to transform. Lupin's 
error was not taking his potion that day).
