What makes you think so? Moody is a pretty tough guy, and that is about all we know- at least to judge from his looks. To put the Imperius Curse on his students seems very reasonable, otherwise how could they learn to shake it off?

The fact that Neville is frightened of him- I don't know, but IMO it's more his aspect and the magical eye that frighten Neville, and he's afraid only at the first time, later on, we don't hear anything about it.

And it is Neville, of all persons, who names the Cruciatus Curse, which might make Moody think that he has in some way overcome this problem. Certainly, demonstrating it is not a nice thing to do, but he has to put it on *something* and for that matter, I'd frankly prefer to see it cast on a spider than, let's say, on a mouse, let alone one of his students. 

I'm afraid that Real!Moody won't be as nice as Fake!Moody, and less accessible. Maybe he won't act "like Lupin would have done" (in Harry's opinion), but show his students a much harsher facade.
