I had a thought similar to yours. Perhaps the person who conjures the
Patronus sees its shape because he knows what to expect or because it came
out of him. To others, it would have a form with rather indistinct
features, unless you know what to look for. Dumbledore did say, "Then I
remembered the most unusual form your Patronus took." He may not have
realised what the form was until he heard Black's story about the animagi.
