I think that perhaps Lily was close to Arabella Figg somehow. I know she's a 
lot older but still, Lily could have been close to her. Arabella being 
Harry's godmother would explain a lot!

For example, we know that close friends of the Potters were in a league 
against Volemort. Arabella is part of the "old crowd" as Dumbledore says. If 
she was Harry's godmother that would explain why she lives on Privet Drive.
